Position Overview

The Department of Cardiac Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and supports other investigators within Cardiac Sciences.

The Research Manager is a highly skilled senior scientist with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, technical aspects and practices essential to directing complex acute coronary syndrome and interventional cardiology procedure-oriented research projects. The Research Manager's role will be multifaceted, and include directing the research program well as managing local, national, and international collaborative research projects.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Project Direction and Leadership:
    • Direct and manage the research program
    • Develop, design, and implement research projects for summer students, graduate & post-doctoral students, as well as research staff.
    • Developed and implement scientific vision
    • Establish and maintain multi-faceted research team
    • Manage performance and development of individual team members to maximize success and motivation
    • Oversee research progress and adjust project objectives as necessary
    • Oversee development of technical protocols for translational research studies.
    • Contribute to departmental administration (organizing meetings, journal club, seminar series, University of Calgary Research budget/accounting meetings)
    • Oversee the development and management of the study budgets.
    • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of study procedures, technology, external collaborations, and travel.
    • Direct research team to ensure lab operations meet all university compliance and regulatory guidelines including those in accordance with Health Canada and the United States Food and Drug Administration.
    • Oversee management of legal issues related to research (i.e. ethics, MTAs, IP)
    • Coordinate the assembly and submission of papers for publication
  • Clinical Trials Leadership and Delegation:
    • Evaluate, adapt, and implement trial protocols
    • Troubleshoot and optimize enrollment challenges
    • Organize personnel and study materials to ensure study efficiency and patient safety
    • Oversee the processing of regulatory documentation
    • Manage physician and researcher training related to study protocols
    • Create and update study delegation logs
    • Prepare and negotiate budgets for clinical trials
    • Ensure study feasibility both from a practical and financial standpoint
    • Manage research project accounts
    • Prepare and lead pre-study and site selection visits
    • Prepare regulatory documents for sponsor (e.g. 1572 form, Investigation New Drug Application (IND) form, curriculum vitae, CHREB membership, lab-related documents)
    • Train/educate team regarding clinical trial (e.g. pharmacist, medical technician, students, research fellows.)
    • Communicate with and educate impacted clinical staff, units, and cardiac catherization laboratory on the aspects of the research project
    • Develop or delegate the creation and maintenance of screening logs
    • Contact and schedule subject visits and procedures
    • Review eligibility with Principal Investigator and primary care physician
    • Assist with the development and/or delivery of study information to ensure subject receives appropriate information prior to informed consent
    • Maintain ongoing communication with subject's primary physician
    • Plan and coordinate all tests, procedures or evaluations required by the protocol in a safe, effective and timely manner
    • Educate subject regarding medical condition and protocol requirements
    • Ensure subject compliance through education, support and monitoring progress; in order to maintain scientific validity and ensure patient safety
    • Liaise and refer, as appropriate, with other health care professionals throughout study
    • Document and follow study drop-outs and withdrawals
    • Provide unblinding information to subject and primary care provider as appropriate
    • Either in the requirement for medical emergency, or end of study
    • Receive, store and acknowledge drug/product from Sponsor and inventory according to FDA and TPD guidelines. Dispense drug/device to study subjects
  • Staff Management:
    • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
    • Performs training of students and interventional cardiology research fellows in their respective fields of research such as clinical trials, translational research, and/or outcomes studies
    • Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
    • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
    • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
    • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters required, PhD preferred
  • Minimum 10-years in related field
  • Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized (e.g. AUPE) environment an asset
  • Must maintain a recognized research professional certification (e.g. CCRP Certified Clinical Research Professional)
  • Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
  • Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately.-
  • Hold a superior understanding of the University environment including the Business Administrative System (BAS) including PeopleSoft and Efin
  • Successful budget and contract negotiation skills with study sponsors and contract research organizations (CRO) with a track record of obtaining study-funding and/or grant-funding
  • Knowledgeable in designing and implementing medical/scientific research protocols, including those that are investigator led and industry-sponsored
  • Proficiency with databases, database design, case report forms, and electronic medical records including Alberta Netcare, Sunrise clinical manager, MUSE, Intellispace Cardiovascular, and APPROACH
  • Experience in research design and development
