Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request.Water Services has an exciting opportunity for practicum/co-op students currently enrolled in a recognized Water/Wastewater Technician Program. Under the supervision of Intermediate and Senior Plant Operators, you will assist in the operation of the Glenmore and Bearspaw Water Treatment Plants, secondary pump stations and storage reservoirs. This position is generally responsible to assist Intermediate Operators (IO) with "hands-on" operations (for example:. conducting water quality tests, first response for equipment malfunctions, etc.) . Primary duties include:
  • Assist the IO in the hands-on operation of pumps, valves, set points values and other manual equipment at the water treatment plans; monitor computer control systems; isolate, bypass or shut down sections of the plant in response to an emergency or repair..
  • Assist the IO to conduct scheduled tests (e.g. chlorine residual, fluoride concentration, turbidity); perform unscheduled analytical testing to confirm accuracy and calibration or as part of operational procedures..
  • Assist the IO in controlling and optimizing filter-bed performance using computer control and visual inspections; assist in correcting plant upsets including overflow of waste streams to dechlorination system.
  • Safe handling of plant chemicals and assist in containing and clean-up of chemical spills.
  • Under the mentorship of the IO, learn overall operation of the Plant.
Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).
  • Currently enrolled in a qualified Water and Wastewater Technician Program and completion of one semester, or enrolled in 4th class Power Engineering program and completion of one semester.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Computer aptitude, communication skills, and knowledge of water chemistry and water treatment technology will be considered assets.
  • Success in this position requires applicants to hold safety as a value, as working safely is critical in all tasks performed and in all decisions made.
Working Conditions: Working in the water treatment plant where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required.Pre-employment Requirements

  • Successful candidates will be expected to report to various city locations.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
