ABOUT FORT MCKAY
The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 800 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately 400 members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay — a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray. Fort McKay offers the best of both worlds: remote northern life for the nature lover and proximity to a large city of about 70,000 people with all the amenities you need.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly motivated Parks & Conservation Ranger with excellent communication skills and a passion for outdoor settings to join our team! Under the direction of the Parks Land Lead, the incumbent will work in a team environment and be responsible for the supervision of the Moose Lakes camp, Namur Lakes area, Fort McKay reserve lands, archeology site areas, and the "Moose Lakes Special Management Zone". The Parks & Conservation Ranger will also assist with nuisance wildlife management in the community of Fort McKay. Travel between Fort McKay and Moose Lake will be necessary, consisting of overnight stays at Moose Lake as required. This is a permanent full-time position working a 7 days on and 7 days off shift based on eighty (80.5) hours bi-weekly.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Gather resource data by taking inventories of fish and wildlife, collecting air, water, and soil samples and/or assisting biologists in scientific research
- Patrol and monitor designated reserve areas and waterways including Moose Lake camp area and Namur Lakes area
- Record changes in the environment and collect data that can be used to document environmental impacts and changes
- Monitor Traditional Land Use and tend to air and water monitoring stations, as necessary
- Manage the natural habitat using known habitat conservation and restoration techniques
- Educate park visitors and local community about the park, wildlife, environmental issues and facilitate effective educational opportunities and experiences for our schools
- Respond to wildlife conflicts that pose a public safety concern
- Record observations, enforce Fort McKay by-laws or report incidents outside of jurisdiction
- Respond to and report emergency situations including visitor injuries, fires and land and water rescues
- Investigate damage and complaints and remove violators from the camps and/or reserve area with the cooperation of the RCMP, as required
- Work with the RCMP and with the Fish and Wildlife office as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma in related fields such as: Park Ranger, Conservation Officer, Environmental Science studies, Resource management and/or Forestry with experience working in the parks systems or outdoor environment is preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Must be willing to attain Peace Officer Level 1 (CPO 1) designation or equivalent
- Past experience as a Peace Officer or Bylaw Officer would be an asset
- Good physical fitness to move with ease throughout - sitting, standing, walking intervals
- Experience working and living in an outdoor setting is an asset (such as Hunter, Trapper, or someone with knowledge of the traditional territory)
- Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check
- Must have a Class 5 Drivers license and clear drivers abstract
- Experience working in a First Nations community is a definite asset
- Ability to speak Cree or Dene is an asset
- Further training and certifications may be required for the position and would be considered an asset to this position if already obtained
