Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request.As a Groundman 1, you will be responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of various vehicle detection systems and safety cameras; building and reconditioning of signal heads; and set up of construction work-zones. Primary duties include:
  • Set-up construction zones and lane closures in traffic.
  • Install detection systems for vehicles, cameras, bikes, Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) and counting stations.
  • Locate, repair and/or install underground duct work.
  • Install, maintain and replace intersection safety devices.
  • Maintain, build, wire and test signal heads, and assist with construction and overhead maintenance activities.
  • Perform duties including operating and maintenance of heavy tools (for example: jackhammers, concrete saws and pneumatic drills.
Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of related experience; or 1 year of experience as a Signals Groundman 1.
  • A valid Class 3 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) is considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of small engine maintenance (2 and 4 stroke).
  • Preference may be given to applicants with previous signals experience.
  • Success in this position requires excellent communication skills and radio conduct; the ability to use caution and exercise sound judgement with regards to safety and work site hazards.
  • Successful applicants must successfully complete all City of Calgary training provided.
Working Conditions: Employees will be required to work in all types of weather (rain, snow, heat or extreme cold) with heavy lifting and physical activity involved.Pre-employment Requirements
