The Clean Technologies Team at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) works with industrial clients to support implementation and development of emerging clean technologies with a focus on circular economies. The Clean Technologies Team is a multidisciplinary group that focuses on the valorization of biomass and natural gas feedstock, accelerating environmental remediation, and adding value to resource-sector waste streams.
The position of Research Assistant 1 will work directly under the lead project research associate to support actives related to the characterization and utilization of residual biomass materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct scientific experiments related to chemical synthesis and characterization of residual and waste industrial materials.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain applicable chemical reactors and equipment.
  • Independently work on experiments, document procedures, follow and write SOPs, conduct hazard assessments.
  • Run analytical chemistry instruments including gas and ion chromatography and spectroscopy equipment
  • Collect and present data ensuring data is collected accurately using appropriate techniques and procedures.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate experience with the chemical and physical characterization of lignin and lignin products is essential
  • Experience with running chemical reactor flow loops for the determination of adsorption capacity is essential
  • Experience with analytical chemistry and spectroscopy instrumentation including FTIR, BET surface area, chromatography, CHNS elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy is required
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, are required
  • Experience with data processing is highly desirable

Qualifications:

  • Technical diploma in Nanosystems Engineering Technology, or other related field
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a laboratory work setting

Remuneration: $1,679.44 - $2,143.46 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (AUPE Classification â€" Research Assistant I)
This position is covered by the AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees) Collective Agreement.
