â©â©Position Summary
â©â©The swine technician and Registered Veterinary Technician is involved in all aspects of supporting research surgical activity and all aspects of breeding herd care and husbandry, extending to research support when required.
â©â©Duties
â©- â©
- Assist in all aspects of swine breeding herd management including, but not limited to, artificial insemination, farrowing management and piglet husbandry, treatments and vaccinations, sow management, weaned pig care and feeding, facility maintenance and sanitation. â©
- Assist with research pig sales to internal users and researchers in medicine and biology. â©
- Euthanasia by approved methods, as required for both humane and research reasons. â©
- Maintain data collection standards for regular production and, where required, research projects. â©
- Real-time ultrasound procedures, including pregnancy detection. â©
- Surgical suite set-up. â©
- Preoperative preparation of pigs, including medication, anaesthesia induction, intubation, and surgical site preparation. â©
- Anaesthesia maintenance and monitoring during surgical procedures. â©
- Support of post-operative care, including administration of drugs, wound or incision care, regular monitoring for infection, signs of discomfort, body temperature, feed intake, etc. â©
- Monitoring of all post-operative care provided by students or research staff. â©
- Post-surgery clean up of the operating room, pre- and post-op areas, scrub room, autoclave room. Surgery laundry. â©
- Accurate record keeping for billing â©
- Dispense and administer controlled drugs â©
Minimum Qualifications
â©- â©
- Registered Veterinary Technologist licensed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association â©
- Basic computer skills including MS Office and Google Suite â©
- Strong written and verbal communication skills â©
- Self-motivated, team player â©
Preferred Qualifications
â©- â©
- Swine or large animal husbandry experience an asset â©
- Experience in a research facility considered an asset â©
