Company Overview:
Sunterra Farms Greenhouse Ltd. is the latest addition to the Sunterra Group of Companies. Based in Acme, Alberta, alongside the Sunterra Farms Head Office and Soleterra d'Italia, Sunterra Greenhouse Phase 01 will incorporate 20 acres of the latest advancements in LED and High-Pressured Sodium (HPS) technology to supply premium, locally grown strawberries and vine tomatoes year-round. Grown under glass with a strictly controlled microclimate, the greenhouse will provide optimal growing conditions for the plants to thrive, even in cold winter climates. The greenhouse expansion plan includes three additional phases over the next 3-5 years, for a total of 70 acres, with the first phase currently operational.
Position Summary:
The Senior Greenhouse Manager position is critical in various ways to the crop and culture success of Sunterra Greenhouse. With aggressive expansion plans and the utilization of the latest greenhouse and automation technology, this position is dynamic and requires an "outside the box" service provider mindset when addressing issues that arise with the greenhouse as your customer. The position is a vital aspect to achieving above-average production and creating a strong and healthy work environment. The Senior Greenhouse Manager is ultimately responsible for the daily activities relating to crop health, irrigation, climate, pest management, and labour planning, in the tomato greenhouse.
Responsibilities
- Supervise staff in the transplantation and overall care of crops
- Daily crop review to assess plant health by checking for nutrient and water levels as well as root quality
- Analyse and Adjust irrigation according to plant needs
- Ensure substrate moisture is sufficient
- Order fertilizer according to recipe
- Ensure fertilizer is mixed and sufficient to meet need
- Maintain recirculation tank levels in a sustainable manner
- Consistently walk through the crop to assess plant health pest presence and "real feel" of the climate
- Adjust and report on the climate to ensure ideal settings are being maintained for ultimate crop health
- Identify pest presence and move labour accordingly
- Order necessary biological controls and chemicals to keep pest pressure low
- Actively participate in Priva alarm rotation schedule
- Proactively assess which tasks need to be completed weekly according to crop development
- Estimate task completion times to keep labour flowing effectively
- Train labour supervisors on new tasks and methods as needed
- Enforce corrective actions as necessary in coordination with human resources
- Create an environment of mutual respect between employees and managers
- Give regular feedback to supervisors on performance and concerns
- Labour reports: updates on year-to-date costs, labour needs planning
- Energy reports: updates on gas use
- Production reports: updates on year-to-date production, variety comparisons
- Ensure compliance of overall CanadaGAP food safety program by being a good example and participating in the program as required
- May be required to attend other locations on an as needed basis, thus must be able and ready to travel within Canada
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements:
- Must display strong leadership and mentoring skills to promote a team environment
- Must have experience using Priva
- Thorough understanding of agricultural management and greenhouse production
- Strong English verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required
- Experience managing a greenhouse is required
- 10 or more years experience managing, planning and directing the production of soft fruit crops, including tomatoes
