Position Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Environmental Technologist.

Reporting to the Manager, Department Operations, this position requires exceptional analytical, communication, organizational, and technical skills. Responsible for undergraduate and research environmental laboratories, the scheduled workload is around peak periods of the academic year. Must have the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with a variety of individuals on simultaneous projects. Ability to exercise sound and fair judgement, troubleshoot, resolve issues as they arise, and develop creative and innovative solutions. A high impact of error exists in this role and must be able to work safely with potential work hazards such as chemicals and laboratory equipment.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide knowledgeable and responsible instruction, supervision, and management of undergraduate civil engineering laboratories specializing in the area of environmental engineering. This position also entails mentoring and support of environmental graduate students and faculty within specialized environmental research laboratories. This position provides further technical support to other areas of civil engineering within the undergraduate and graduate program as required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Environmental laboratory technical support:

  • Set up of equipment and experiments in the environmental undergraduate laboratories
  • Provide practical instruction of environmental undergraduate laboratories
  • Provide input in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments in laboratories
  • Acquire, maintain, upgrade, or replace laboratory equipment to ensure that equipment is in working order and setup prior to scheduled laboratories
  • Maintain efficient, safe, well-organized laboratories for students
  • Ordering and inventory of laboratory materials and supplies
  • Chemical inventory and disposal of hazardous waste

Environmental research technical support:

  • Design, set up, and operation of equipment and experiments in environmental research laboratories
  • Provide training and mentoring of environmental graduate students in safe and effective operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Provide input in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments, infrastructure and spaces in research laboratories
  • Provide responsible supervision and management of environmental research laboratories
  • Maintain efficient, safe, well-organized laboratories for students and researchers
  • Ordering and inventory of laboratory materials and supplies
  • Chemical inventory and disposal of hazardous waste
  • Maintain knowledge of current and future technical trends and developments within industry and applies the knowledge as appropriate
  • Participates in training as required

Equipment:

  • Configure, maintain, and operate specialized equipment including environmental testing systems and instruments; laboratory apparatus; and associated infrastructure including: computer operations, electronics, data acquisition systems, computer control for laboratory systems

Civil Engineering technical support:

  • Assist with civil engineering undergraduate laboratories and research as required
  • Provide back-up to department technicians as required
  • Schedule and coordinate inventory and disposal of capital equipment

Safety:

  • Train undergraduate and graduate students on standard operating procedures within laboratories
  • Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in the laboratories
  • Respond to malfunctions and emergencies
  • Safety warden training

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A post-secondary diploma in Environmental Technology or equivalent is required. A Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or equivalent, and industry experience is an asset.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability, with experience in computing, electronics, and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory testing and analysis techniques, and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Ability to lift and push heavy objects
